POLICE have arrested two men caught exceeding the legal bag limit for golden snapper during an operation targeting illegal fishing. The two men, aged 58 and 76, were arrested at Gunn Point Rd with 24 golden snapper – 18 more than the legal bag limit of three per person.

Senior Constable Sean Stanley said police stopped the men, who were driving a Toyota LandCruiser towing a 4.6m boat.

He said Operation Arbell focused on marine safety and enforcing bag limits put in place to protect stock numbers of fish species.

β€œThe possession limit in the Northern Territory for golden snapper is three per person – they were over the bag limit by 18 fish,” he said.

He said more than 100 boats were searched on the water and at boat ramps over the weekend.
